Avian Energy:

Avian Energy is using its unique experience in light wing design and construction to explore the power generation potential of tethered aerofoils. Their aim is to increase flexibility of wind generation in three main areas:

1. Flexible collection altitude.
The ability of the collection wings to be moved to the most appropriate altitude. For example on light wind days to be able to reach stronger higher winds.

2. Flexible collection area.
The ability of the swept area to altered depending upon wind conditions and power requirements by changing the flight path of the wing.

3. More flexible in location with reduced need for massive structures.
The ability to site the power station more easily off shore without the need for massive towers, foundations and generators up very large poles. Avian Energy's, short term, goal is to demonstrate the potential of tethered wings for large scale electricity generation. Avian's current research project is to build a prototype of their concept which will, when complete, demonstrate the following milestones:
